Catalyst Capital is a venture capital organisation based in Marlborough, New Zealand. We invest capital into privately owned New Zealand businesses, with a special interest in fostering growth and opportunities in the Marlborough region.

Not only do we invest funds, but we also incorporate mentoring and coaching, and help put in place strong financial structures and networks. It's part of our 'active investor' philosophy. We believe this is key to the success of any venture.

We select businesses where we believe we can work together well and develop solid partnerships. To us it's about more than just strong financial returns - it's about coming on board to create meaningful growth, and exiting gracefully having made a real difference.
Skin in the game
We believe it's important for all parties to have some 'skin in the game'. Business owners we work with must be personally invested and have a stake in their own business. We too will take a stake (at an agreed percentage). This way we all have a strong incentive to work towards our common goals.
The right fit
While we like dreams, we want to work alongside realists! The best fit for us are solid businesses with great products, service, culture and ambition. While no industries are specifically excluded you'll have a harder time persuading us if you're in the tech industry. We do not invest in research and development (R&D).

Catalyst Capital is a registered Financial Services Provider with the Financial Markets Authority of New Zealand. This means we must adhere to a professional code of conduct, have and maintain appropriate qualifications and experience, and undertake ongoing professional development.

Meet the Founder
David Taylor
Founder of Catalyst CapitalPrior to emigrating to New Zealand in 2012, David’s career was in Corporate Banking, as a former senior Banker with Lloyds Banking Group.
This gave David exposure to a wide and diverse range of businesses, sectors, and markets, which in turn led him to begin his business Positive Potential, in New Zealand.
He has worked across the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and the Pacific, so brings a global perspective to the table – dovetailing with his knowledge of the unique New Zealand market.
David is an accredited Executive Coach and Mentor and serves on a number of Boards. David has an innovative style and strong passion to help others develop, both on a individual and organisational level.
In his business Positive Potential, David came to see business owners who were hampered in their plans to grow due to a simple lack of access to funds. This, coupled with his desire to build opportunities in his adopted country, inspired him to start Catalyst Capital in 2016.
I have a strong desire to help New Zealand businesses do well. I believe they can, and I want to help them do it! Sometimes this can be achieved with excellent coaching - other times a well-executed injection of capital is necessary.
Our approach
Reasonable sums
We partner with owners and managers of private New Zealand businesses through investing in tranches of NZ $25,000 (at a minimum). We believe that generally to make meaningful change you need meaningful sums of money.At the present time we offer a pool of NZ $250,000 for investment.
Responsible investors
We pride ourselves on being responsible investors which means we focus on investing in businesses in order to create growth and genuine value for stakeholders.Not only do the businesses we choose to invest in benefit but, in turn, they also support their employees (and their families) and create a ripple effect for customers, suppliers and the communities they operate in.
Real growth
Our investments are focussed around growth, which may include acquisitions, and can include start-ups and emerging businesses. The keyword here is growth. We are most excited about creating real growth in real companies, partnering with real people.
